CHCA Students Present the Pilot of DreamWorks’ “Madagascar, Jr.”

The Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy Theater Department was proud to present DreamWorks’ Madagascar A Musical Adventure Jr., January 13th-15th at CHCA’s Lindner Theater. Directed by Anna Brink, the cast and crew of 90+ students in grades 5-8 sang, danced, moved sets around, managed lights and sound, and acted in this DreamWorks popular tale. CHCA had the privilege of being only one of two schools in the country to perform this as a pilot musical!

Based on the hit DreamWorks animated motion picture Madagascar, Madagascar Jr. follows all of the favorite crack-a-lackin’ friends as they escape from their home in New York’s Central Park Zoo and find themselves on an unexpected journey. Filled with outlandish characters, adventure galore, and an upbeat score, Madagascar Jr. left audiences with no choice but to “Move It, Move It!” Alex the Lion (Justin Vest), Gloria the Hippo (Sarem Desta), Marty the Zebra (Jireh Burton), and Melman the Giraffe (Cooper Schneider) led the audience in laughter as they found themselves in a strange new place full of wild animals, including the dangerous foosa and the hilarious lemurs, led by King Julian (Andrew Vest). Between their adventures in the jungle and the comical appearances of the ever-popular penguins, this musical was a treat for all ages.

“I think that the show went beautifully!” shares Director Anna Brink. “The audiences were laughing and moving to the music at every performance. The cast and crew of 105 students total (counting high school volunteers) worked hard to put on a fabulous performance. I loved watching them learn and grow throughout the entire process, from October until January!”

CHCA Fine Arts Director, Mona Summers, shares, “Congratulations to our Madagascar, Jr. cast, crew, directors, leadership team, and volunteers on an outstanding sold-out production! This year’s musical included a record number of students involved in both the cast and crew, and an incredible group of parent volunteers. Thank you to Director Anna Brink for her amazing direction and leadership of Madagascar Jr. and the previous six CHCA productions she has directed. Sadly, Anna is stepping down as Director in order to spend more time with her family. Anna is a very talented director who developed our students’ gifts and passions and loved working with this age group of students. She is much loved in return and will be missed by everyone.”

The show is one of four major productions put on at Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy this year. CHCA’s Upper School grades 9-12 are also in full swing rehearsing for the upcoming theatre classic, Fiddler on the Roof. This beloved story features iconic songs such as the beautiful “Sunrise, Sunset,” the boisterous “If I Were a Rich Man,” and the classic “Matchmaker, Matchmaker.” Each year, the local chapter of The Cappies (a national critics and awards program for high school theatre) honors top performances in musicals and plays throughout our city. Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy is consistently recognized and honored by The Cappies, most recently with its production of Anything Goes!, bringing in 13 nominations. Fiddler on the Roof will be March 10th at 7:00 p.m., March 11th at 2:00 and 8:00 p.m., and March 12th at 3:00 p.m. Order tickets here.
